About Dr. Lucy McBride
I'm a Harvard-trained primary care physician in Washington, D.C. For 25 years, I've sat across from thousands of patients who are smart, capable, and doing everything "right," yet still feel confused, dismissed, or alone in their experience navigating the system.
They’re caught between a healthcare system built around rushed appointments and fragmented care, and a wellness industry selling certainty, control, and expensive promises. In both worlds, something essential gets lost: the whole person.
Too often, my patients don’t lack information. They lack partnership. They lack context. They lack agency.
I wrote Beyond the Prescription because you deserve more than a quick fix or a trendy solution. You deserve care that sees you and a roadmap that puts you back in the driver’s seat of your own health.
I've Been A Patient Too
I've spent 25 years as a doctor. But I've also been a patient. That dual perspective changed everything.
When I got sick in my 20s, I was bounced from specialist to specialist. I was tested for everything from Giardia to a brain tumor. I was prescribed medications while being told that "everything looks normal." I felt dismissed. Misunderstood. Powerless in my own body.
More than a diagnosis, I wanted someone who would listen, sit with the uncertainty, and help me make sense of what was happening instead of simply ordering the next test.
When I finally received that kind of care during medical school, I had a realization that reshaped my career: the system isn't designed to empower patients. It's designed to process them.

Why I Wrote This Book
I trained at Harvard Medical School and Johns Hopkins, worked in academic medicine, and now run a direct primary care practice in Washington, D.C.
Through my clinical practice and my writing, I focus on one goal: restoring health agency — the ability to interpret your data in context, ask better questions, and make informed decisions aligned with your values.
I know what's broken — the rushed appointments, the insurance constraints, the productivity pressures that leave patients unseen. And I've been on both sides of it.
I wrote Beyond the Prescription not to criticize doctors. Not to promote trends. But to give you a roadmap for asking better questions, seeking the help you need, and taking charge of your own health.
